A group from our engineering and production teams has completed advanced robot applications training at KUKA Türkiye’s headquarters — the manufacturer’s own programme, taught on the manufacturer’s own equipment.

A robot on a factory floor is only ever as good as the people who set it up. The arm arrives the same for everyone; what separates a cell that holds its cycle time from one that does not is the judgement of the engineer who commissioned it. Most integrators pick that judgement up on the job, one project at a time, inheriting whatever habits the last project happened to teach. We would rather our engineers learned it from the company that builds the robot.

Advanced application training goes well past jogging an arm and teaching points. It is about coordinate systems — base, tool, world — and what quietly goes wrong months later when one of them was calibrated carelessly. It is about the motion types, and knowing which of them is the wrong choice for a given move rather than the one everybody reaches for. It is about payload and inertia, which decide whether a gripper change is a parameter edit or a redesign. And it is about writing a programme another engineer can still read a year from now, when the person who wrote it is on a different project.

Safety sits alongside all of it. There is a real difference between a guard that stops a cell and a guard that stops it correctly — a difference that only shows up on the day something goes wrong, which is exactly the day nobody wants to be improvising.

This matters to a customer for an unglamorous reason. When a cell runs slower than it was quoted at, or stops for something nobody can immediately explain, the cause is nearly always somewhere in that list. The distance between a team that guesses and a team that knows is measured in days of downtime, and those days land on the customer’s production plan, not ours.

The work this feeds into is already on this site. A robotic welding cell for body sub-assemblies. A four-axis packaging and palletising robot. A fourteen-station dual-robot foam casting line. The engineers who commission those cells and answer the phone when one of them stops are the same people who sat this course — which is the entire point of sending them.

Training is not a certificate for a wall. It is the reason a commissioning week ends on the day it was planned to end, and the reason a fault gets diagnosed instead of guessed at. We will keep sending people, and we will keep saying so, because a customer choosing a supplier is entitled to know who will actually be standing in front of their machine.
