Harnesses are the assemblies most often built from tribal knowledge — and the ones most likely to be re-ordered long after the person who knew has left.

A cable harness looks simple enough to build from a photograph, which is exactly why so many are. Then the volume grows, the builder changes, and it turns out the photograph did not record wire colours, routing order, tie positions or the exact length that made it fit.

A releasable harness definition needs a wiring list with from-to endpoints, a layout with dimensions, the connector and terminal part numbers with their crimp specification, the marking scheme and the test criteria. That set is not luxurious. It is the minimum required to build the same harness twice without a phone call.

Where documentation is thin — the normal case — the industrialization phase is when it gets rebuilt. We measure what exists, agree the tolerances that actually matter and back-document the result into a released set, so the series starts from something a third party could work from.

The five-year test is a good way to judge whether it is enough. If the current builder disappeared tomorrow, could another shop reproduce this harness from the documentation alone? If not, the documentation is a description of a build, not a definition of a product.
