When the schematic, the terminal plan and the BOM are outputs of one model, they cannot contradict each other. When they are separate documents, they eventually will.
Every panel builder has seen it: the schematic says terminal X21:4, the terminal plan says X21:5, and the BOM lists a relay that appears on neither. Nobody made a careless mistake — three documents were edited at three moments by two people, and drift is what separate documents do. The panel then inherits the drift, and commissioning pays for it.
Our answer is structural, not procedural. The EPLAN project is the single model; schematics, terminal diagrams, cable lists, wire labels and the bill of materials are generated outputs of that model. Change a contactor in the model and every document that references it updates together. Consistency stops being a discipline problem and becomes a property of the toolchain.
The model reaches the workshop floor directly. Wire lists drive the cutting and labelling equipment, so the ferrule printed on a conductor came from the same database as the schematic the electrician is wiring against. When testing finds a discrepancy, there is exactly one place to correct it — and the correction propagates to every future output automatically.
For customers, the practical benefit shows up years later. The documentation shipped with the panel matches the copper inside it, and when a retrofit or an extension comes, the incoming engineer starts from a trustworthy model instead of reverse-engineering the cabinet. We routinely inherit third-party panels where the survey costs more than the modification; that cost is the price of drifted documents.
This also disciplines change management during a project. A customer request arrives, the model is revised, and the delta is visible: which pages changed, which wires, which BOM lines. Pricing a change honestly and executing it without collateral errors both depend on knowing its exact footprint — which a folder of PDFs cannot tell you.
Our advice to buyers is blunt: ask your panel supplier what they wire from. If production works from generated outputs of a maintained model, revisions will not bite you. If production works from printed PDFs with handwritten corrections, you are buying the drift — you just have not received the invoice yet.
