A depot loses time to a question that sounds trivial: where is that train, and what does it still owe? Answering it usually means someone walking the tracks with a clipboard, and by the time the answer reaches a planner it is already out of date.

Every train here carries an RFID identity tag on its windscreen — the same idea as the toll transponder in a car. From that identity the system follows where the train is, what it is doing and what maintenance is due against it, and it plans and follows up the work orders on that identity rather than on a paper number.

Around a thousand people work in it at the same time, across kiosk terminals in a multi-track depot and on their phones. Mobile notification is deliberately confined to the depots: a maintenance alert is useful where the work happens and is noise everywhere else. The system covers high-speed and regional fleets from two different builders, and was delivered for a global technology group and a public authority — both named on request.
